The Jesuit, "In All Things" Blogs On Theater Brothel

A Resilient 'Ruined'

Author: Karen Sue Smith

An excerpt.

A brothel run by Mama Nadi (Saidah Arrika Ekulona) and affects her “girls,” her patrons and herself. Mama’s main attraction is Josephine (Cherise Booth), an athletic, enticing daughter of a village chief.
But as the story unfolds, two more girls are added, when Christian (Russell Gebert Jones), a Fanta-guzzling salesman who customarily brings treats and hard-to-get necessities into the brothel for Mama Nadi, comes with his own niece, Sophie (Condola Rashad, making her theatre debut), who has been raped with a bayonet,
hence “ruined” and rejected by her family and her tribe, and Salima (Quincy Tyler Bernstine)

They don't much. I guess being an expert on brothels is something!

Could the title of your post be any MORE misleading? The intention seems far from charitable.

What you linked to simply mentions a brothel as one of the settings in the play for which it is offering a review, a play which is clearly not promoting brothels, or inviting people to one.

How about "The Jesuit 'In All Things' blogs on a drama about the plight of poor women in the Congo"? This would be a far more accurate portrayal of what you've linked to, as I read it.

The situation of women in the Congo, where rape is being used as a tactic of war, and where women have been raped are treated as pariahs, is a quite serious one. It's a situation which Christians would do well to make themselves aware of, and it seems the play which Karen Smith is reviewing is trying to do that.

Instead of pointing this out, you've used this as an opportunity for a cheap dig at America magazine.

And, as the previous comment demonstrates, encouraged others to do the same.

Ok so I'd usually download the version from iTunes and plug in my iPhone and it'd work. But it won't this time, is there any way I can possible get the new version but without using iTunes ? Like directly from a website or something ? Thanks a looot :)
