Demographic Decrease: Jesuit High Sacramento

For the first time in its 56-year history, Jesuit High School has hired a layperson as its principal.

The all-boys school in Carmichael announced Friday that Brianna Latko, 37, will succeed the outgoing principal, the Rev. Edward Fassett, on July 1.

Making Latko principal aligns Jesuit High with a nationwide trend: Two-thirds of U.S. Jesuit high schools have lay principals. And Jesuit High is the last secondary school in the California Province of Jesuits to make the transition.

Part of the trend is practical, said the Rev. Gregory Bonfiglio, Jesuit High's president.

"The number of Jesuit (priests) has decreased," Bonfiglio said. "We have been aware of that demographic for decades."
